Between sea and mountain

The Antarctic Peninsula points north like a finger. It stretches 1200 kilometers from Antarctica towards Tierra del Fuego. It is a wild area in the world, even though it has the mildest climate in Antarctica with an average of three degrees in summer.

To the north is the Drake Passage; sailors speak of it in awe and those who have passed it receive a nod of recognition. For all others there is a direct flight from South America.

On the Antarctic Peninsula you can expect mountains over 3000 meters high, from which glaciers roll down to the sea. Mighty is the Larsen ice shelf in the west and the ice fields in front of the Bellingshausen Sea. The ice is omnipresent on a journey to the Antarctic.

Island hopping off the Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula is surrounded by a multitude of islands. Many of them have melodious names or are connected with famous discoverers. If you travel between Elephant Island and the Southern Ocean Circle, you can meet all of them: James Clark Ross, Ernest Shackleton or Erich von Drygalski. Your expedition leaders and guides will be happy to take you on a journey to the famous explorers and their adventures.

Even today there is sometimes the opportunity to visit one of the research stations in Antarctica.

Since the first adventurers and discoverers, Antarctica has been explored and measured with increasing precision. Nevertheless, it has retained its magic. Nature is strong down here.

If you are allowed to experience an expedition cruise in the waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, you may pass by large tabular icebergs. These are icebergs that have broken off from the ice shelf, some of them as big as cities or even states. They lie in the Antarctic Sound and are slowly melting as the current and wind pushes them through the cold waters. Seemingly nothing is able to bring them out of their element.

At eye level with the animals of the Antarctic Peninsula

The cold, nutrient-rich waters of Antarctica offer a well-set dinner table. Elephant seals, leopard seals, fur seals and harp seals cavort in the water. And if you like penguins, you will get your money's worth here. Again and again there are large colonies of Gentoo, Adelie or Chinstrap penguins.

But the round of animals is crowned by the whales. The peaceful giants of the oceans come from warmer waters to Antarctica in midsummer (December and January) to fill their bellies. Minke whales, humpback whales or orcas, among others, find prey here - and enthusiastic spectators.
